1.Why would you like to join Hogwarts Home? Will you participate in both the process of sorting new applicants and the sub-communities one you have been sorted?
I’d like to join Hogwarts Home because I’m a big fan of Harry Potter and I like fun communities like these. Yes, once I have been sorted I will sort new applicants and join the sub-communities. I’ll participate as much as I can.
2. Have you read all 6 of the Harry Potter books? Which book was your favorite and why?
Yes, I’ve read all six and each was great and unique! My favorite was Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban because the plot is very different from the other stories, and there is no direct Voldemort. It’s also the most suspenseful one in my opinion. I like the new places, people, and items that are brought up, Hogsmeade, the Knight Bus, Sirius, Lupin, the Marauders’ Map, Divination, the Firebolt, Buckbeak, the Time Turner… I also really like reading about Quidditch and liked how it had a greater importance in this book. The ending was really sweet, too: I was happy that Harry had finally found a member of his family.
3. What character do you most relate to? Why?
I can mostly relate to Hermione Granger because we both really enjoy reading. I read a lot, I always have a book with me no matter where I am. When I was in primer and was never placed in a class in which I had friends, I spent the first two months of each year reading during the break. In second grade I abandoned picture books for children novels because we could borrow library books at school for a week, and I’d finish the picture book in a couple of minutes and then would have nothing new to read. I have a huge collection of books and I feel hollow when I don’t have a good one to read. If I have to do any research, I’d rather start by searching books than by surfing internet for hours. Like Hermione, I’m also very hard-working, I spend a lot of time on my homework and am very studious. I hate breaking rules. Also, we both have a thirst for knowledge. I’m the only one to read the encyclopedias the school gives us at the end-of-the-year awards ceremony. And I’m often qualified as a ‘nerd’ by unfriendly classmates because I always do my homework and I’m always the one to know what homework we have to do for the week.
4. Who is your least favorite character? Why?
I’m a tie between Snape and Cornelius Fudge. Snape is a very complex character, and no matter how much I re-read the series, I can never make up my opinion. I’ve read essays written by fans on Snape, I’ve discussed him with friends for hours, yet I can never find out if he’s good or bad. When he does something good I have doubts of his true intentions, and when he does something bad I have doubts if it was out of cruelty or necessity. Either way, Snape confuses me more than physics homework.
I strongly dislike Fudge. I don’t think he’s a very good minister. He gives me the feeling that he does things not because he necessarily thinks they are good, but because people like Lucius Malfoy or the power of the media lull him into doing them. He always seems uncertain in his choices and always has to ask others for their advice. He is too easily manipulated, especially by the media (as we see in books 4 and 5): in book 3 Fudge seems to like Harry a lot, but he hates him after Rita Skeeter writes all those hyperbolized articles about him.
5. What part of the series would you change if you were J.K Rowling? Why?
I would change the hatred between Harry and Malfoy. I’ve always wondered how that hatred could exist after only their second meeting, when they were just 11! I’m 14 and there is no one in particular I despise as much as Harry hates Malfoy (and vice versa). So many things could’ve changed for the better if the boys didn’t hate each other. I strongly dislike unhappy endings, and things would be better if they didn’t hate each others. I’m not saying they should be friends – being indifferent of each others would’ve been enough. I do agree though that this is very important, and essential, to the story.
I would also like more details… Rowling only writes about very few Gryffindors (there couldn’t only be eight of them!) and about a couple of teachers. I would’ve liked to know more about the precise courses they had to take and their schedules. A couple of things I thought needed precision: for example the homework they have to write on scrolls of parchment – how could they keep track of it? I’m very keen on details, I like to know as much as possible on characters and their lives.
6. If you were Headmaster/Mistress at Hogwarts, what changes would you make? Why?
Hmmm… I’d make a lot of changes, especially concerning the first years. I think they need much more guidance. After the Sorting (which they hardly know about), they follow their house prefects into their common rooms, and then they’re on their own. I would have their Head of House talk to them for a while, give out schedules, explain the basic functioning of Hogwarts, and give them a tour of the school. It’s very stressful to get into a new school, and if you don’t know anything about it it’s even worst. Something should be done about physical education. Only the Quidditch team members ever play sports, and we all know that sports are important for health. I’d establish at least two hours of physical education per week per grade. I’d also do something about the competition between houses, which doesn’t bring anything good. Sure, there should be some competition between houses, but less than there is now.
7. If you were faced with a boggart what would you see?
My boggart would turn into either a dark, bottomless, seaweed-infested ocean or a gloomy surface or underground lake. In either ways, a natural body of water. I am afraid of them because I always think that a dark sea-creature will appear from behind rocks, or that something is going to trap me into seaweed. The sea is also very powerful, and I’m afraid that something will suck me and that I will drown. The depth and length of natural bodies of water are humongous and give me a feeling of weakness and loneliness.
8. What are your top 3 positive traits that you feel define you? Why?
I’m optimistic. I’m almost always smiling and happy, and I laugh a lot. It really takes a lot to make me sad, and usually it’s either excess of stress because of schoolwork, or because someone I knew and liked died. My most coming sayings are “Well, on the bright side of things…” or “At least [insert happy comment here]”.
I’m mature. I don’t laugh about foolish, childish things. I know when it’s the moment to work and when it’s the moment to do what I want. I think a lot, and at a dinner party I’d rather talk with adults than with immature kids, even if they are my age.
I’m perseverant. This fits with my vengeful personality (see below). I never give up. When I’ve set my mind on something, I’ll be thinking of ways to get to do it until I can. I’ve been wanting to horseback ride for two years now, and I’m still not giving up. Usually this is for personal gain – I haven’t had any goal that could help others yet. The goals can be anything, but mostly academic ones.
9. What are 3 negative traits that you feel hinder you?
I’m very vengeful. When someone has hurt me, I will plot revenge until they forgive themselves. Every time someone does something bad to me, my first thought is revenge. I never forgive people unless they have given me an honest apology. Last year someone badly hurt my feelings – I’m still thinking about it!
I’m rather quick-tempered. I can get mad really easily, even about the silliest of things. I get very annoyed when people don’t trust what I say when I know it is true. I get angry at someone very often.
I’m rather introverted. I don’t go towards people, I always have to be introduced. I’m very shy, and if I’m around people I don’t know too well I’ll usually stay in my corner. The new girl hanging around, not really daring to talk to anyone, her nose in a book is me. Don’t mistake me – I have a lot of very good friends, I just have a lot of difficulty in making new ones.
10. Please tell us why you should or should not be placed in each of the four houses.
For: I’m stubborn, loyal and rather passionate.
Against: I’m really not brave: I’ve seen a roach in my basement 6 months ago and I still won’t go down there. I also sit down and think before I do anything.
For: I’m hard-working, loyal and optimistic. I’m honest with those I know well. These qualities I value in others.
Against: I’m not always completely honest with those I don’t know quite well. I’m very impatient, quick-tempered, and I’m not completely selfless.
For: I’m mature and I consider myself to be smart. I think before I act or speak, and I love learning and books. I hate writing in SMS or other phonetic languages because it kills the beauty of the real, original one.
Against: I tend to procrastinate to the last moment. I have ‘street logic’, not ‘book logic’.
For: I’m determined and I want to succeed.
Against: I’m not power hungry at all. Though I’m determined, I will only get what I want in a nice way. I don’t manipulate people to get what I want, I ask for help instead.
11. Which of the four houses do you feel you are least suited for? Why?
I think I’m the least suited for Slytherin. I don’t care about people’s racial origins, and I don’t insult them about it (note: I’m referring to the ‘Pureblood’, ‘Mudblood’ issues). Power doesn’t interest me at all, and I won’t do anything possible to get some. I’m not much of a manipulator either.
12. If you could place one memory in a pensieve, what would it be? Why?
I’d put memories of important things, such as birthdays, births, and important ceremonies because it would always be good to re-live them. I’d also put memories of fun times, like parties, or just fun moments with friends or my family for when I feel a little sad, bored or lonely. Sometimes I’d put memories of classes to help me study, too.
13. Many say our choices are what make us unique. How easily do you make choices? Do you often regret those choices later?
It depends on the choice I have to make, sometimes I choose very easily, other times it’s harder. Either way, I always think about them before I do anything. I rarely regret my choices because I spend a lot of time thinking about them and I know what I’ll be doing so nothing bad surprises me. I always look on the positive side of things, too.
14. Which of the four Hogwarts Founders (Rowena Ravenclaw, Salazar Slytherin, Godric Gryffindor, Helga Hufflepuff) which would you be most interested to meet and why?
I’d have to say Salazar Slytherin. First of all because we don’t get to know as much of the other three, and second of all because of his actions. I’d like to know were his hatred of Muggle-born wizards comes from, and how he built the Chamber of Secrets. Salazar seems to me like the most interesting Founder because of that. I’d have much more to ask him than the three others.
15. What do you feel makes Hogwarts so magical?
The fantasy of it. Hogwarts is so extraordinary that it even amazes wizard-borns like Ron. The way we don’t really know how big it is adds to it. And the little details like the Great Hall’s ceiling, the talking portraits, the floating candles, the secret passageways… all play an important role is this magic.
16. The Second war between Light and Dark is taking place; who do you think will win the final battle? Why do you feel this way?
If this happened for real, I think Light would win. Why? Because this time they are prepared in advance. They know who they are against and won’t be taken by surprise like in the first war. The Order of the Phoenix has started training and even the Ministry of Magic has sent pamphlets on self-protection to the other witches and wizards. But since this is fiction, I think Dark will win. It would be a bit cliché if Light did. Though I hate sad endings, I think something very bad would have to happen if Light won. Just so it’s not a ‘they got married and lived happily ever after’ type of ending.
17. What is your favorite spell in the Potter Universe? Why?
A spell like the one Tonks uses to pack Harry’s trunk in book 5. I’m very organized in my schoolwork: I have a folder with several compartments for each subjects in which I store handouts and homework, I group the books of one subject in my locker so I don’t have to dig around for them, I write graded homework in red, normal homework in blue, and events in green in my agenda… But my room is a mess. My couch is literally hidden under a pile of clothes that I just throw there after my shower. I make my bed at the last minute (right before I go to sleep). A lot of objects on my desk have nothing to do with work. A nice spell like the one Tonks uses would keep my room tidy.
18. If you were given the opportunity to own and run one shop in Diagon Alley or Hogsmeade, what would it be? Why?
I think Honeydukes. It’s such a bright and colorful shop, and it must be a lot of fun to work around magical candies all day. Spending my time thinking of new candies and guiding others’ choices would be just great… And so would living in Hogsmeade!
19. From reading the first book, we know Harry was almost placed in Slytherin. If you were the Sorting Hat which of the four houses would you have placed him?
I do think that Harry is more of a Gryffindor. Hufflepuff and Ravenclaw wouldn’t suit him at all, and his actions don’t make me think much of Slytherin. Harry is brave, rash and loyal like a Gryffindor. He’s not mischievous enough to be a Slytherin.
20. There are many wonderful sorting communities on Livejournal; Why would you like to be a part of Hogwarts Home? Have you read and understood all the rules?
I’ve read all of the rules and when I did, I felt that this was a good, fun community and that I would enjoy my stay here.
